How to Convert a PDF to a Google Form Quiz (Free, with AI)

You have a PDF (lecture notes, a chapter, a study guide) and you want a Google Forms quiz that grades itself. Google Forms has no import button for files, so the trick is a two-step workflow: let AI generate the quiz from your PDF, then hand it to Google Forms. In this guide we show the fastest free way to convert a PDF into a Google Form quiz, plus a manual fallback and an option for Canvas and Brightspace users.

Why you cannot import a PDF into Google Forms directly

Google Forms can only import questions from other Google Forms. There is no upload option for PDF, Word, or CSV files. So every “PDF to Google Form” workflow has two parts: something that turns your PDF into well-formed quiz questions, and something that gets those questions into Forms with the answer key set. Here is the combination that teachers tell us works best.

Step 1: Generate a quiz from your PDF (free)

Upload a PDF, pick the quiz type and question count, and generate

Go to SlideSpeak’s free quiz generator for PDFs (no account needed), upload your file, choose the quiz type and number of questions, and click Generate Quiz. The AI reads the document and returns a formatted quiz with an answer sheet:

If your source is a PowerPoint or Word file instead, the PowerPoint and Word versions of the tool do the same job.

Step 2: Turn the quiz into a Google Form with Brisk (free)

The free Brisk Teaching Chrome extension can generate a Google Form from whatever document you have open. Upload your quiz to Google Drive and open the preview (no conversion to Google Docs needed), then click the Brisk icon and choose Create, then Quiz.

The prompt matters: ask for “a Google Form quiz using the exact questions and answer options from this file”. If you only say “create a quiz about this file”, Brisk writes brand-new questions on the topic instead of using yours. In the settings, pick your grade level and set Output format: Google Form.

A minute later Brisk links you to the finished form, saved in your Drive with the answer key set:

No extension? The manual fallback

If you cannot install extensions on your school device, the workflow still saves most of the typing. Open a new form at forms.google.com, switch on quiz mode (Settings, then “Make this a quiz”), and paste each question and its answer options from the generated quiz document. Google Forms automatically splits pasted answer lines into options, so a 10-question quiz takes a few minutes. Mark the correct answers from the answer sheet as you go.

Using Canvas, Brightspace, or Schoology? Use QTI instead

If your quiz’s final destination is an LMS gradebook rather than Google Forms, skip this workflow entirely: SlideSpeak exports quizzes as QTI packages that import into Canvas, Brightspace, and Schoology as native, auto-graded quizzes.

Frequently asked questions

Is this really free?

Yes. SlideSpeak’s quiz generator is free without an account, and Brisk’s free plan covers Google Form creation (with daily usage caps).

Can ChatGPT convert a PDF to a Google Form?

ChatGPT can draft quiz questions from a PDF, but it cannot create the Google Form for you, so you still end up in the manual fallback. The SlideSpeak plus Brisk combination automates both halves.

Does the Google Form grade itself?

Yes. With quiz mode on and the answer key set, Google Forms grades multiple-choice responses automatically, and scores flow into Google Classroom if you assign the form there.

Wrap-up

PDF in, auto-graded Google Form out, and nothing typed twice. Start with the free PDF quiz generator, and if you also teach with slides, see how one district turns a PowerPoint into a narrated video lesson plus a Google Forms quiz with the same tools.
